I’m in therapy and finally learning how to take care of my mental health after a lifetime of being taught that mental health issues are demonic. Someday, this will be funny.

If you’ve never been to church, consider yourself lucky. Maybe you’ve heard a dad joke, but pastors take it to the next level. Quite a few of them try to use dad jokes to teach churchgoers about hell.

On Sundays the friendly tone and smiles of church pastors was a stark contrast about the message of hell. It felt strange to be terrified while laughing. I dissociated from sermons by pretending that my life was a movie and someday I’d be able to stop performing in front of church, my family, and my community.

Then on Monday I’d get some rest from any attempts for a grown man to use hellfire to make me laugh.

Before starting standup, I’d only ever seen one comedy special: Dave Chappelle’s Killin’ Them Softly. I’d seen Seinfeld but rarely paid attention to Jerry Seinfeld’s intros, where he could be seen delivering standup.

Mo Amer was one of the first comedians to make me rethink the craft. He does an expert Mexican-American accent and  revealed that it took him 22 years to become a US citizen. That’s how long it took me. 

Before watching his work, I often felt a pang of pain when talking about my past. For one, I’ve moved a lot and have struggled to find direction. 

After Mo Amer I needed comedy with depth. I asked for recommendations. I found Cristela Alonzo, Taylor Tomlinson, Maria Bamford, and so many more. 

I watch Seinfeld’s bits now whenever I rewatch episodes on Netflix. I get it now.

This year I kept writing, but I’ve also decided to rework my material with a heavy hand. No wasted words or gestures. No unintentional movements on stage allowed. 

I was listening to a podcast in which the host talked about Jim Carrey and his commitment to his standup and acting roles.

Commitment is at the root of how I was taught to make others laugh. COMMIT TO THE BIT. When you do that even the most basic jokes get a new life. 

Commit to the bit. Live in that world, embody that punchline, dig deep, and live for the craft. 

Yeah, I know I sound crazy right now.

Estoy en terapia después de toda una vida donde me criaron para creer que la salud mental es del diablo. Algún día esta observación será chistosa.

Si nunca has ido a la iglesia, considérate afortunada. Tal vez has escuchado los dad jokes (chistes no chistosos), pero los pastores llevan ese género de humor a otro nivel. Muchos de ellos tratan de usar estos dad jokes para enseñarles sobre el infierno. 

Los domingos, la tonada amable y sonrisa de muchos pastores que querían ser graciosos era totalmente lo opuesto de su mensaje sobre el infierno. Era raro sentir terror mientras me río. Yo me disociaba de los sermones pretendiendo que mi vida es una película y algún día ya no tendré que actuar una parte con mi familia, mi comunidad o la iglesia.

Y los lunes venían y podía descansar de los sermones sobre el infierno que incluían chistes malos.

Antes de comenzar a hacer comedia el único especial de comedia que había visto era Killin’ Them Softly de Dave Chapelle. Había visto episodios de Seinfeld pero no le ponía atención a los monólogos antes de que comience el show.

Mo Amer fue uno de los primeros comediantes que me hizo reexaminar el arte de la comedia. El hace una muy buena impresión del acento mexicano-estadounidense y reveló que se tardó 22 años en conseguir la ciudadanía de EEUU. Yo también tardé 22 años en conseguir la mía. 

Antes de ver su trabajo, sentía dolor físico al hablar sobre mi pasado. Yo me mudé varias veces y me ha costado tener una dirección.

Después de Mo Amer yo comencé a necesitar comedia que toca temas profundos. Pedí recomendaciones. Encontré a gente como Cristela Alonzo, Taylor Tomlinson, Maria Bamford, y muchos más. 

Ahora cuando veo episodios de Seinfeld en Netflix miro los monólogos de Jerry. Ya entiendo.

Este año he seguido escribiendo chistes pero decidí trabajar mi material con mucho más rigor. No desperdiciaré ni una palabra o gesto. No haré movimientos en el escenario que no ayuden a contar la historia. 

Estaba escuchando un podcast donde la host hablaba sobre el compromiso de Jim Carrey cada vez que se sube al escenario o que actúa en películas. 

El compromiso es la base de cómo se me enseñó hacer reír a los demás. COMMIT TO THE BIT (no tiene traducción, pero significa que crees en el mundo que estás creando con tu comedia). Cuando haces eso hasta el chiste más básico tiene una nueva vida. 

Sí, sueno como una chiflada.
