Introducing: Legally Funny // Les presento a Legally Funny

Last year I knew for sure I’d leave Argentina in June 2025. I gave away one of my favorite books, half of my closet, and even sent goodbye messages to a few friends. 

And then my anchor client cut my hours. Suddenly I didn’t have the wage I’d need to be able to survive in L.A. I got depressed, considered moving to Spain, Mexico, or even Chile. Then I decided to stay in Buenos Aires because I worked hard to build a community here. I’m not going to throw that away when I can just stay and calmly make life decisions surrounded by people I care about.

I promised myself that once I’d get ready to leave Buenos Aires – if it ever decides to let go of me – I’d go back to a place where I have some modicum of roots. I’ve been a nomad long enough, and though I want to travel the world, I’m going to move back to a place where I also have friends and a community instead of starting again – hopefully.

I don’t have to guess whether or not the past few years have been hard for anyone reading this. We’ve all felt the weight of the world get heavier. It’s in times like these that we need to find the strength to try new things, follow our dreams, and never give up.

Legally Funny

When Miss Venezuela Teatro Bar offered the chance to produce Legally Funny 1 in August, I wasn’t ready. I was trying to sell tickets to my birthday show and I was starting anxiety medications for the first time. I’d have to produce two shows within five days, and I knew I couldn’t possibly bother my friends to go to two of my shows in one week. 

So I decided to rise to challenge and be okay with failing in public. 

And then I didn’t. 

I just had to spam the internet with my publications, pass flyers around, and start using (ugh!) Facebook again to promote the Legally Funny 1.

Tomorrow, October 9, I’m hosting Legally Funny 2, and three local comedians and storytellers decided to trust me enough to be in my lineup. I decided to add a costume theme because it’s October, and I love all things Halloween. 

Since I’m trying to cultivate an audience outside of my friends, I decided to make a silent film, and a police procedural promo inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s sketches in the GNX tour (his are FAR superior). 

The show is called Legally Funny because I wanted a 2000s feel to the first edition. I thought of the film Legally Blonde. But now, the show is going to keep this name because I was raised in L.A., and my roots are both in the U.S. and El Salvador. Both of these countries are seeing quick and expedient human rights violations, and humor is just what we need right now.

El año pasado yo sabía que me iría de Buenos Aires en junio del 2025. Regalé mi libro favorito, la mitad de mi closet, y le mandé mensajes a mis amigos diciéndoles adiós. 

Y después mi cliente más grande me cortó las horas. De repente no iba a tener un sueldo que me deje sobrevivir en Los Ángeles. Me deprimí. Consideré mudarme a España, México y hasta Chile. Después decidí quedarme en Buenos Aires porque trabajé muy duro para formar una comunidad acá. Mejor me quedo en un lugar donde pueda estar rodeada de la gente que quiero mientras hago mis decisiones con calma. 

Me prometí a mi misma que cuando me vaya de Buenos Aires – si es que esta ciudad me suelta en algún momento – me volveré a un lugar donde ya tengo amistades y algo de raíces – o eso espero. Ya he sido nómada por mucho tiempo. 

No tengo que adivinar si los últimos años han sido difíciles para las personas que estén leyendo esto. Todos hemos sentido que el peso del mundo ahora es más que antes. Y en estos tiempos debemos buscar la fuerza para probar nuevas cosas, seguir nuestros sueños y nunca darse por vencido.

Legally Funny

Cuando Miss Venezuela Teatro Bar me ofreció la oportunidad de producir Legally Funny 1 en agosto yo no estaba lista. Estaba produciendo un show de comedia para mi cumple y tratando de vender entradas. Tendría que producir dos noches de comedia en 5 días y no tenía el valor de pedirle a mis amigos que vayan a dos de mis shows de comedia en una semana. 

Así que decidí lanzarme y estar bien con que me vaya mal en público.

Y después no me fue mal.

Sólo tuve que spamear todos mis grupos de WhatsApp, volantear, y volver a usar Facebook otra vez (¡el horror) para promocionar Legally Funny 1.

Mañana 9 de octubre se hará Legally Funny 2 y tres comediantes y cuentistas me confiaron lo suficiente para ser parte de mi grilla. Agregué una temática de disfraces porque ya casi es Halloween, y yo amo ese feriado.

Ya que estoy probando cosas nuevas, hice un sketch silencioso y otro sketch tipo detective inspirado por los sketches de Kendrick Lamar en su gira GNX (los de él son MUCHO mejor que los míos). 

El show se llama Legally Funny porque quería un toque de nostalgia millennial para la primera edición. Mi inspiración era Legally Blonde. Pero mantuve ese nombre porque crecí en Los Ángeles, mis raíces son de los EEUU y El Salvador. Estos dos países están viendo muchas violaciones a los derechos humanos, y el humor es lo que necesitamos en este momento.
